Frequently Asked Questions:
MATERNITY & NEWBORN
When is the best time for a maternity or newborn shoot?
Of course you can have maternity portraits taken at any point during your pregnancy but I advise clients to schedule their maternity portraits for any time between 32 and 38 weeks. Be aware though not to let it get too close to your due date.
The best time to take newborn portraits is during the first two to three weeks of the baby’s life. At this stage they mainly sleep and feed, and are therefore easy to handle and photographs with mum, dad and siblings. Three to four weeks after birth a lot of babies develop spots or newborn acne in addition to going through feeding frenzies. Both make taking portraits very difficult and I therefore recommend you wait until the baby is 2-3 months old, can look at you and hold their own head. Please contact me to discuss what is best for you and your baby. It’s never too late to take portraits of your new baby and I am never too busy to fit you in last minute!
Where will these portrait shoots take place?
How long do the maternity and newborn shoot take?
The maternity shoot takes around one hours. For a newborn portrait shoot I usually allow more time (around 2-3 hours). This allows time for portraits of the baby, capturing details and pictures with individual and all family members as well as changing, feeding and soothing.
What should I wear for my maternity portraits?
Before we begin taking photos, we will also go over your wardrobe choices. Please take some time prior to our shoot thinking about what to wear. 2-3 maternity outfits would be good. Try and avoid big logos as they draw attention away. Horizontal striped tops as well as maternity dresses as well as the ‘husband’s white shirt’ photograph well. Also have a look at Pinterest for inspiration, they have loads of good outfit suggestions for maternity portrait sessions.
Do I need to prepare anything for the newborn shoot?
Please can you please get the following items ready for our photo shoot if you have them:
- a clean large towel, if possible white
- a few clean muslin cloths for those unplanned milk burps
- a dummy if baby has one
- a breastfeeding pillow
- a hair dryer – great for white noise and extra warmth
- any hats, headbands or any other accessories you would like to incorporate in the portraits
- a sheep skin or clean fluffy rug if you have it
Shall I dress up my newborn baby?
Newborns sleep a lot so it would be good if you could dress your baby in your favourite outfit in advance so we don’t need to wake him/her. I usually start off with some relaxed time between parent and baby, including some shoots of the babies room or toys.
KIDS & FAMILY PORTRAIT
What time of the day is best for our family shoot?
Ultimately you know your children best and what time of the day they usually are in a good mood, not too tired and up for a little adventure. Mornings seem to be the time that most children are at their best, but I can fit in whatever suits you best as a family.
How long will the shoot take?
The shoot will approximately take one and a half hours. Kids usually don’t last longer and get cranky/bored after that.
Where will we take the family portraits?
I will contact you a few days prior to discuss the location. We can do the photos in your house, go to a park, farm, forest or field or do a combination of things. If we take the photos in your home it would be good if you could prepare an area with good natural lighting by making it as tidy and clutter free as possible. When I get to your home I’d like to start by looking at the space to see if there is anything that catches my eye. Everyone’s home is different. Some people have many spaces which will photograph well, others may only have one or two.
How shall I dress my children for the photos?
This is completely optional. You may want to colour coordinate your outfits. Try and avoid big logos, colours and textures are great though. Have other sets of clothing to hand if you wish to incorporate different outfits for anyone. Also have a look at Pinterest for inspiration, they have loads of good outfit suggestions for family portrait sessions.
What shall we bring?
Bring food and water for the children as well as their comforters if they have any. Also bring toys, accessories, hats, Daddy’s sunglasses, Mummy’s hat, Aunty’s patchwork blanket or whatever else you would like to incorporate into your pictures. Not everything always works well on photos but it’s good to have the choice.
What if it rains on the day of an outdoor shoot?
Every effort will be made for the session to take place but if the conditions are too bad, the session will be rescheduled.
